The Design Inspiration behind Country Rose

It is little surprise that ‘Country Rose’ has fast become one of the most popular labels that we stock at The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, the pretty collection offers incredible versatility for a modern lifestyle and is easy to wear, mix and match.

We thought that we would try to gain a little insight into the inspiration and design ethos behind the idea by speaking to Rebecca Tong head of the design team behind the collection.

Hi Rebecca,
What sparked your interest in fashion?
I’ve always loved it ever since I was little, I never thought of doing anything else as a career.

Are you self taught or did you study fashion design?
I studied at Kingston University near London.

What was the inspiration behind the concept for The Country Rose Collection?
The inspiration was the outdoors and a relaxed lifestyle.

Who was the person that you had in mind when the idea was conceived – did you have any one person in particular who the look was based on? (Celebrity or style icon)
We really wanted to design a collection for our younger more casual customer. We didn’t base it on a particular celebrity or anyone else’s style because we wanted it to suit everyone.

Where did the cute little duck come from and is it called Rosie?
The duck was chosen as the Country Rose motif as she represents outdoors and country life – and yes we nicknamed her Rosie!

Do you spend a lot of time in the countryside?
I do since I moved to Langholm! Southern Scotland is so peaceful; I love the countryside here for walking and sketching.

How about gardens, any favourites?
I recently visited Gertrude Jekyll’s walled garden on Lindisfarne Island in Northumberland, it’s wonderfully chaotic.

Do you have a favourite countryside get away that you go to for inspiration?
The west coast of Ireland is really beautiful; it makes a great place to escape to for inspiration.

What is your favourite Country Rose garment?
One particular favourite garment is really difficult to choose but I love the sausage-dog print shirts and dog motif jumper this season, they’re great fun.

Did any Country Rose item prove particularly difficult to get right?
Most items take a lot of time and teamwork to get just right; we like to make sure the customers will love each piece.

I notice there are quite a few dog motifs on this seasons collection are you a dog lover?
I love dogs and many of our design team have pet dogs, but I’m really a cat person.

Thanks for the interview Rebecca – we can’t wait to wear the new collection!
