How to Care For Your Wax Cotton Jacket

The wax cotton jacket’s increase in popularity in recent years has made it the must have all weather jacket.   It is easy to understand why – the wax cotton jacket is one of those rare garments that is both practical and stylish, not only that, it will actually look and feel better as it ages.

Whilst it may never keep you as dry as a synthetic weather-proof jacket, it will come pretty close and (we think) it has heaps more style and personality.  A wax cotton jacket is a classic that looks just as good paired with smart tweed as it does with jeans and a t-shirt –  it can be worn just about anywhere.

The outer of our wax jackets are made from 100% cotton that is treated with a special wax coating. This coating helps to and acts as a protective barrier against wind and water, yet still allows the fabric to remain breathable.

The key to getting the most out of your wax cotton jacket is to show it a little care and attention and in return it will serve you well for many years.

To help you we have put together this simple step-by-step guide on how to re-wax and care for your jacket.

Re-waxing your jacket:

Step 1: Lightly brush off any dirt or soil, and if necessary use a cold damp cloth to wipe down the jacket.

Step 2: Heat your tin of reproofing wax so that it becomes pliable and easy to apply, you can pop it into a pan of hot water and warm it gently – we used Granger’s waxed cotton dressing.

Step 3: Evenly apply wax with a lint-free cloth, paying special attention to the seams. Take care to not get wax on the corduroy collar or inside of the jacket!

Step 4: Allow wax to settle and dry slightly then remove any excessive build up.

Step 5: Use a hair dryer to melt the wax into the jacket – this should ensure the even spread of wax. If necessary, re-rub the wax in a circular motion to further even out the wax for a smoother finish.

Step 6: Allow to dry in a well ventilated area for at least 24 hours.

Please note: It is advisable to work on individual panels and to re-wax the front and back of your jacket separately.
